Renewable Energy

Qatar's National Renewable Energy Strategy aims to enhance the utilization of renewable energy sources to provide a more sustainable future for upcoming generations. Due to its excellent solar energy resources and some of the highest levels of global horizontal radiation in the world, Qatar has great potential to expand its use of renewable energy.

The QNRES focuses on three primary objectives:

  • Reducing CO2 emissions through sustainable policies and trends, which will enhance environmental sustainability and contribute to improving air quality
  • Increasing the penetration of renewable energy while maintaining network reliability
  • Maximizing the socio-economic contribution from renewable energy.

The QNRES aim to:

  • Deploy a utility-scale renewable energy capacity of 4 GW by 2030, with a primary focus on solar PV technology, increasing Qatar's energy mix's proportion of renewable energy from 5% to 18% by 2030.
  • Achieve a target of 200 MW of distributed renewable energy generation, which will allow customers to install solar photovoltaic systems in their facilities for self-consumption, and export excess power to the grid.

Qatar's National Renewable Energy Strategy aims to enhance the utilization of renewable energy sources Qatar's renewable energy vision aims to enable the development of a sustainable and affordable energy system. Therefore, the Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy has developed a comprehensive report that outlines the country's renewable energy strategy and action plan.

BeSolar

In order to achieve the objectives of Qatar's National Renewable Energy Strategy, Kahramaa launched the distributed solar energy service for users/customers (BeSolar) and prepared the distributed solar energy policy and the net billing mechanism, which is an incentive for all users/customers to install solar energy systems in facilities such as homes, shops, factories.

Solar Net Billing

When electricity is produced from solar panels, the produced electricity is consumed to meet the customer's needs and then the surplus is sent to the network, after which a two-way meter measures the amount of surplus electricity sent to the network. Accordingly, Kahramaa will reduce the price of the surplus electricity from the next bill, which contributes to reducing the customer's bills.

Price of surplus power exported to the KAHRAMAA network, categorized based on the consumption categories established by KAHRAMAA:

CategorySurplus Electricity Purchase Price (QAR/kWh)
Governmental 0.237
Collective-Industrial 0.237
Industrial 0.237
Commercial 0.237
Hotel (major hotels) 0.237
Agricultural 0.237
 Residential 0.237

FAQs

It refers to systems that rely on renewable energy sources (such as solar energy) and installed in any facility for self-consumption with the surplus electricity being exported to the grid
The installed solar capacity installed should not exceed the customer’s contracted load demand and be under 25 MWdc.
Applications can be made through authorized consultants through the Ministry of Municipality Building Permit System. The technical guidelines can be found at:Techical Documents

The main equipment is Solar Panels, Inverter, Interface Protection, and metering system.
Yes, but the application must be submitted by the owner.
A List of Pre-qualified Equipment and Suppliers is available in KM website:KM Site
Electricity bill will be reduced for the energy which is consumed from Solar System plus for extra energy that is exported to gid, customer will get credit for the next months.
Yes, Kahramaa will apply the net billing mechanism, which will result in lower bills, because the power exported from the solar system will be credited to your account. To learn more, visit KM website: Technical Documents
Kahramaa will soon publish a list of prequalified contractors for solar PV systems. Customers should only assign a KM approved contractor.
No, currently Kahramaa doesn’t impose any fees on solar PV systems applications.
No, it is not required to apply through Kahramaa for off-grid solar systems. You can contact a specialized company to design and install the system directly. KAHRAMAA has published a guide for off-grid solar systems to raise awareness and highlight best practices
