Qatar's National Renewable Energy Strategy aims to enhance the utilization of renewable energy sources to provide a more sustainable future for upcoming generations. Due to its excellent solar energy resources and among of the highest levels of global horizontal radiation in the world, Qatar also has a great deal of potential to enhance its usage of renewable energy sources.

The QNRES focuses on three primary objectives:

  • Reducing CO2 emissions through sustainable policies and trends, which will enhance environmental sustainability and contribute to improving air quality
  • Increasing the penetration of renewable energy while maintaining network reliability, and
  • Maximizing the socio-economic contribution from renewable energy.

The QNRES aim to:

  • Generate 4 GW of central solar photovoltaic electricity, increasing Qatar's energy mix's proportion of renewable energy from 5% to 18% by 2030.
  • Generate 200 MW of diversified solar energy systems, which will allow subscribers to solar photovoltaic systems in their facilities and electricity production in the grid.

Qatar's renewable energy vision aims to enable the development of a sustainable and affordable energy system. Therefore, the Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy has developed a comprehensive report that outlines the country's renewable energy strategy and action plan.

BeSolar

In order to achieve the objectives of Qatar's National Renewable Energy Strategy, Kahramaa launched the distributed solar energy service for users/subscribers (BeSolar) and prepared the distributed solar energy policy and the net billing mechanism, which is an incentive for all users/subscribers to install solar energy systems in facilities such as homes, shops, factories.

Solar Net Billing

When electricity is produced from solar panels, the produced electricity is consumed to meet the subscriber's needs and then the surplus is sent to the network, after which a two-way meter measures the amount of surplus electricity sent to the network. Accordingly, Kahramaa will reduce the price of the surplus electricity from the next bill, which contributes to reducing the subscriber's bills.
