District cooling system of Al Rayyan World Cup Stadium is the most energy efficient
Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) represented by Director of District Cooling Services Department, Eng. Abdulaziz Al Hammadi visited the Energy Center of Al Rayyan Stadium accompanied by several of the Department’s engineers.
The visit came in conjunction with the ongoing preparations for hosting the Amir Cup Final, and in continuation of KAHRAMAA’s vital role in equipping the stadiums with the latest systems and technologies and accomplishing the preparatory work for international and local tournaments by intensifying monitoring and follow-up processes and raising the level of operational capacity.
This comes within the framework of KAHRAMAA’s tasks as one of the major institutions to sponsor and support the organizing committee of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
Al Rayyan stadium uses district cooling technology which operates through a central station with a cooling capacity of 16,000 tonnes, distributing chilled water to the stadium through a power station, and from there to a large number of air treatment units distributed in the stadium to ensure the required temperature for the fan stands area and the floor of the stadium.
The station also relies on environment-friendly materials in the construction process and follows the standards of sustainability of water resources as it uses a technology that allows treated wastewater to be used directly for cooling purposes. The treated water is also used to irrigate green spaces in Al Rayyan Stadium park and its facilities, which helps sustain water resources in the country. The district cooling system used in the stadium consists of innovative and environment-friendly technologies and is considered one of the most efficient and energy-saving systems. This makes it the most sustainable solution as it saves about 40% of electricity and 98% of drinking water when compared to traditional cooling solutions.
KAHRAMAA seeks to enhance water security in the State of Qatar by shifting to the use of treated wastewater instead of potable water in all district cooling plants, which is considered the best sustainable system in the region and one that supports the sustainability of water resources. KAHRAMAA also uses the latest equipment and smart monitoring and control systems which leads to high energy performance. The District Cooling Services Department at KAHRAMAA also works with all district cooling service providers in Qatar to improve district cooling systems and to optimize the use of resources in a manner that benefits the state and society.
