As Part of its Social Responsibility Efforts
The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation "KAHRAMAA" marked World Autism Awareness Day, which falls on April 2 of each year, by lighting its buildings in blue.
KAHRAMAA joined in this international celebration as part of its social responsibility and with the aim of shedding light on autism and raising awareness among community members about this disease, its root causes, methods of treatment, as well as correcting common misconceptions and underlining the best ways to manage it. This also falls within the State of Qatar’s contribution in the global humanitarian campaign to raise awareness about autism, and to express solidarity with the “Autism Speaks” organization campaign entitled "Light It Up Blue" to shed light on autism in various countries of the world.
This year’s celebration comes under the slogan "Moving to Adulthood" with the aim of drawing attention to issues related to the transition of autism spectrum children to adulthood and the importance of access to higher education, work opportunities and active participation in society.
By marking this global event, KAHRAMAA aims to contribute to spreading awareness of this disease, supporting national state programs and measures to raise awareness on autism, and educating families of autistic individuals on the effective rehabilitation and treatment programs and how to integrate these individuals in society as citizens enjoying equal rights and duties. This also comes in the context of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by all UN member states in 2015.
It is worth noting that observing World Autism Awareness Day comes within the framework of unremitting legal efforts and endeavors undertaken by the State of Qatar to endorse and safeguard the rights of people with autism, especially as it took the initiative to support global efforts to raise awareness and cure for this disease, by submitting on behalf of a number of countries Resolution 62/139 on the World Autism Awareness Day that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.
