KAHRAMAA Visits Al Janoub Stadium Cooling Stations

1

As part of the tasks of the District Cooling Services Department

The Manager of the District Cooling Services Department at the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation “KAHRAMAA”, Eng. Abdul Aziz Al-Hammadi, made a periodic routine visit, along with a number of engineers from the Department, to follow up and monitor the workflow of the district cooling plant of the Al Janoub Stadium that was designed in an environmentally-friendly manner to increase the cooling efficiency inside the stadium. The visit comes as part of the Department’s tasks and role in monitoring and regulating district cooling services in the State of Qatar.

The Al Janoub Stadium uses district cooling technology to cool the stadium through a central cooling plant with a cooling capacity of 20,000 tons. The plant distributes the chilled water to a number of heat exchangers, which in turn supplies them to air handling units distributed in the stadium to ensure the required temperature at the fan zones and the stadium floor.

The cooling capacity of the plant is 20 thousand tons, and it works using technologies that combine the use of chilled water with air handling through heat exchange to cool the stadium and the areas surrounding it. It is one of the most efficient environmentally friendly and energy-saving systems, as it saves about 40% of electricity consumption and 98% of potable water consumption compared to traditional cooling solutions that support the sustainability of water resources. KAHRAMAA works to enhance water security in the country by shifting to the use of treated wastewater instead of using potable water in all district cooling plants, which is considered the best sustainable system in the region.

The cooling plant equipped with the latest equipment and intelligent monitoring and control systems provides the highest levels of energy performance through the use of treated water for cooling, which is one of the sustainable solutions for water resources, and is one of KAHRAMAA’s main goals to enhance water security in the country by shifting to the use of treated water instead of potable water in all district cooling plants, as well as improving energy efficiency and increasing community awareness of the importance of using a district cooling system, which is the best system in terms of sustainability, given the economic and environmental benefits it provides.

It is worth noting that the District Cooling Services Department was established in 2012 as a regulator for district cooling services in the country within the framework of developing and organizing cooling services in the State of Qatar in order to provide services that contribute to enhancing energy and water sustainability. The District Cooling Services Department at KAHRAMAA works with all district cooling service providers in Qatar to improve district cooling systems to ensure efficient use of resources and achieve various benefits for Qatar and society.
