Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation “KAHRAMAA” celebrates the Arab Water Day on 3rd March, under the theme of “lets conserve water to achieve the sustainable development”. KAHRAMAA recognizes the key role water plays to achieve the sustainable development and support the economic and urban development the State witnesses. The event is meant to drag attention to the challenges meet the fresh water resources in the Arab world and the importance of introducing solutions to achieve the sustainable development.
Water is valuable in our region as it is faced by many challenges including the rapid depletion and salinity of underground water, rain scarcity, and demand increase due to the rapid population increase and the economic development witnessed. These challenges threatens development and even life continuity.
Due to the importance of water sector, KAHRAMAA has set the required plans for the development of sector utilities in order to increase productivity and meet the increasing demand. The Corporation construct new stations, upgrade the existing, and increase the strategic storage by constructing mega reservoirs to secure water supply under emergency cases.
The scarcity of water resources and the need to secure water for the coming generation were the motive to launch the National Program for the Conservation and Energy Efficiency Program “Tarsheed” in 2012 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al- Thani, the Emir of Qatar. Tarsheed aims to reduce water per capita consumption by 35% by 2017.
Inspired by the theme of Arab Water Day “lets conserve water to achieve the sustainable development”, I invite all nationals and expatriates to maintain the water resources and reduce consumption to achieve the sustainable development.
