KAHRAMAA observes “Earth Hour”

​In response to the rising challenges being faced by the environment, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation “KAHRAMAA” commemorated “Earth Hour” on Saturday at Katara Cultural Village reflecting its solidarity to support the global initiative.


The event which was observed with Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), witnessed the switching off the light for 60 minutes from 8.30 PM to 9.30 PM at Katara and a number of Government buildings, hotels and several private facilities in Qatar also turned off or dimmed their lights for an entire hour to show their commitment to protect their planet and to raise an awareness of climate change. 


KAHRAMAA, through the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), has called upon its customers and all sectors to join the campaign, emphasizing the need for innovative ways to achieve sustainable development. 


Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Abdulla Al-Jassim, KAHRAMAA’s Public Relations and Communication Manager said that KAHRAMAA’s participation in this initiative aims primarily to raise awareness for the importance of saving energy and rationalizing consumptions among the community and to inculcate the philosophy of Earth Hour as part of everyone’s routine habit. He further said that our efforts will help in preserving our resources and ensure the sustainable development envisaged in Qatar National Vision 2030.


Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Faisal Bin Ahmad Al-Mohannadi, QTA’s Public Relations and Communication Director said: “I am very proud of the great number of participants from tourism sector in Qatar at “Earth Hour” again this year. Qatar Tourism Authority will endeavor to achieve a sustainable future through preserving natural resources and minimizing the negative impact of tourism sector on the environment”. 


Mr. Al-Mohannadi also said that the Environmental sustainability is one of the components of hotels classification mechanism that has been recently launched. “We are also committed to ensure that developments get along with the objectives of National Program for the Conservation and Energy Efficiency “Tarsheed”, he said. “Earth Hour is considered as an important occasion for us to apply our commitment and show our contribution in raising awareness of the environmental responsibility across the world”, Mr. Al- Mohannadi added. 


Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Tariq Abdul Aziz Al-Hamadi, Manager of Public Relations and Communication Department at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, said: “The observance of “Earth Hour” reflects the commitment and concerns of the Ministry in conserving and reducing electricity consumption and raising the awareness among the society about the significance of preserving environment.”​
